Boca Prep Installs XDVR Learning Portal Multiplayer Mode Just in Time for Back to School

Boca Prep is one of the lucky schools selected to beta-test Multiplayer Mode on the XDVR Learning Portal for the 2019-2020 school year! Yesterday in preparation for back-to-school, Xennial Digital visited Boca Prep to install Multiplayer Mode and hold a training session for the teachers who will be using it in their classes.

The XDVR Learning Portal is a growing library comprised of 13 educational virtual reality experiences in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. Its goal is to immerse and engage students in the subjects they’re learning to inspire them to pursue careers in these areas.

Multiplayer mode adds a whole new dimension to VR, allowing people from anywhere in the world to be together in the same experience. This setup is especially useful in an educational setting—the teacher, who wears an HTC Vive, is the “leader,” while her students join the experience in Oculus Gos. The teacher has a menu full of options to gather the students, “freeze” them in one place, mute or unmute them, or call on someone who raises their hand. With all these options, the teacher has the freedom to conduct the class in the way she chooses and even adapt it to her pre-existing lesson plans.

It was great to see the teachers come together and get so excited about this new, engaging teaching method. Once they tried the technology, you could tell their gears were turning as they brainstormed all the ways they could use it in their classrooms. Multiplayer mode makes way for interdisciplinary opportunities connecting students from different classes in the same experience. For example, if a physics class and an anatomy class go into the bat cave together, the anatomy students can teach the physics students about the anatomy of the bat, and the physics students could teach the anatomy students about echolocation.

Students these days don’t know how lucky they are! Many already know and love VR as a gaming platform, but most aren’t used to seeing it in an educational setting. We at Xennial Digital know first-hand how excited students get when they see VR at school, and Boca Prep will be no exception.
